Police: Man threatened to kill roommate with a crossbow

Cody J. Gent pleaded guilty to third-degree harassment, which is a simple misdemeanor, and was sentenced to pay a $65 fine and complete community service, according to court records.

A Coralville man is facing harassment charges after police say he threatened to shoot his roommate with a crossbow.

Officers responded to the 1900 block of South Ridge Drive at about 7 p.m. Sunday after someone reported receiving a threatening text from a roommate, according to Coralville police complaints.

According to the complaints, Cody J. Gent, 26, told the victim he would kill them with his crossbow if the victim told police about Gent's past behavior at their home and about problems with his probation.

The victim said Gent had purchased a crossbow and had seen that Gent had broad-head arrows, police said. The victim was alarmed and threatened by Gent's statement, police said.

After being read his Miranda rights, Gent told police he did not have a crossbow or arrows, but later admitted to having a crossbow in the residence, according to the complaints. Gent is prohibited from owning a weapon while he is on probation, police said.

Online court records show Gent was placed on a yearlong probation in February for a domestic abuse assault charge.

Gent has been charged with first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.
